The Children & Nature Network received customized training for over 200 educators in Hong Kong and China. Professional development and capacity building occurred through five international workshops involving over 230 individuals, followed by nine months of support through webinars, Skype calls, and email, and the development of culturally-relevant tools and communications on the benefits of unstructured nature play.
Columbus Zoo & Aquarium and the Wilds received a completely revised spiral curriculum package built around a pedagogical framework customized for their education programs. This effort includes professional development workshops for a staff of 25 and program pilot testing.
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation received a customized curriculum package on Coral Reef Threats. The high school level lesson plans were designed as part of the free online Education Portal available to educators.

Ocean Discovery Institute received a comprehensive high school curriculum designed to teach scientific research skills, including detailed lesson plans, PowerPoint slides, and field trip extensions for underserved students.
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is receiving a three-year evaluation of the Wildlife Champions Initiative, focused on measuring empathy and stewardship. The project includes qualitative and quantitative assessments of elementary students and teachers, as well as summer camp participants.
Polar Bears International received program evaluation of the Tundra Connections webcasts to assess which messages are most effective at inspiring conservation action. They also received extensive revisions to the online training module used for the Climate Alliance Program and in-person capacity building for communicating about climate change during the 2018 and 2016 Climate Alliance experience. Additional curriculum development and staff training is underway for the 2019 Climate Alliance program.
The Walt Disney Company received curriculum and background writing incorporated into education materials developed by Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment to support popular studio films such as Pete’s Dragon and Moana.
- The Pete’s Dragon Activity Packet focuses on the importance of imaginative play and offers ideas for families to engage with nature together.
- The Moana Educator’s Guide covers interdisciplinary topics thematically represented in the film such as the history of storytelling, the physics of waves, methods of wayfinding, and the natural history and conservation of sea turtles.
Zoo Miami received a complete evaluation of their Conservation Teen Scientist program, measuring the impact of the program on teen participants and zoo visitors. Evaluation methods included pre- and post-program questionnaires and personal meaning maps, intercept surveys with visitors, and focus groups.
